Welcome to my Blog! I love traveling and I love music, so I thought it’d be fun to mix the two. So every week, I’ll be posting a song that either talks about travel, or particular places near and far, or fun folk songs from different cultures, and the like.
To start off this fun adventure, I found a song that I think embodies the idea of “fernweh” quite well. It talks about places “calling” to you and “burnin’ to see” them. It has a dreamy, yearning quality to the music. It also happens to be sung by one of my all-time favorite singers, Bing Crosby. This is a new song to me. I’m not sure how I’ve missed it before, but I absolutely love it! So without further ado – here’s the music with the lyrics below. Let me know in the comments what far away places you’d love to see!
Far away places with strange soundin’ names
Far away over the sea
Those far away places with the strange soundin’ names
Are callin’, callin’ me
Goin’ to China or maybe Siam
I want to see for myself
Those far away places I’ve been readin’ about
In a book that I took from the shelf
I start gettin’ restless whenever I hear
The whistle of a train
I pray for the day I can get underway
And look for those castles in Spain
They call me a dreamer, well, maybe I am
But I know that I’m burnin’ to see
Those far away places with the strange soundin’ names
Callin’, callin’ me
I pray for the day when I’ll find a way
Those far away places to see
Those far away places with the strange soundin’ names
Callin’, callin’ me
Callin’, callin’, callin’ me
